Trauma and Violence Informed Care

Over the past decade, the healthcare community has gained an increasing understanding of how trauma affects health and patients’ experience in the healthcare system. This has led to the development of trauma- informed care (TIC), more recently expanded to trauma- and violence- informed care (TVIC). The gendered nature of violence is a reason why our specialty is positioned to help survivors, and we can implement TVIC in all practice settings, including the emergency department, labour floor, operating rooms and in our ambulatory clinics.  Developing and implementing these approaches is a relevant and important skill set for healthcare providers, to enable safer and more effective care.  To encourage and facilitate a universal TVIC approach to all patients, we have developed this online course. After successful completion of the program, the participant will be able to: Describe the effects of trauma on health outcomes; Define trauma- and violence-informed care; and Apply the principles of trauma- and violence-informed care.
