The Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Quebec (AOGQ) has filed a legal appeal against the Quebec Federation of Medical Specialists, challenging persistent wage disparities between predominantly female and predominantly male medical specialties.
Obstetrics and gynaecology has the highest proportion of women of any medical specialty in Quebec. A report commissioned by the AOGQ also identified significant differences in how certain procedures are valued, including uterine brachytherapy being reimbursed at $82.70 compared with $262.60 for prostate brachytherapy.
The legal action raises important questions about whether the time, complexity and value of care provided to women are being recognized equitably.
