SOGC Statement on Kamloops Residential School

June 4, 2021

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) stands with the Indigenous Peoples in Canada who have faced devastating tragedy at the hands of the Residential School system. We extend our deepest condolences to those impacted by the horrific findings recently uncovered in Kamloops and acknowledge the past and present racism and inequities within our country’s landscape and health care system.

The SOGC has much to learn about the ongoing trauma experienced by generations of Indigenous communities who have suffered a genocide. As an organization, we are committed to advocating for truth and reconciliation to build a path towards allyship by creating culturally safe care spaces for Indigenous patients, families, and health care providers.

The SOGC and its Indigenous Women’s Health Committee will meet shortly to discuss further courses of actions on the matter.
