Extended Release Subdermal Implant Preceptorship Program

This online course will review up-to-date evidence on the effectiveness of LARCs, uptake statistics, and conceptualize the current needs for expanding contraceptive options in Canada. In particular, emerging evidence has shown that etonogesterel subdermal implant is a highly effective contraception option. Etonogesterel subdermal implant will be reviewed in detail, and by the end of the module you will have an understanding of the benefits and risks of this LARC option, how to initiate its use in clinical settings, and overall gain expertise in insertion, localization and removal. Overview of etonogestrel subdermal implant will include review of the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, side effects, safety, and key counselling topics. Furthermore, this module outlines who should be offered the option of etonogesteral subdermal implant and when, contraindications for use, and appropriate timing of insertion. Finally, special topic areas are addressed such as etonogesteral subdermal implant in lactating women, exposure during pregnancy, among women who have obesity, adolescents, and extended use.

 

The online modules of this activity are an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3 – MOC3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. You may claim a maximum of 4.0 hours.

The simulation training (online and hands-on) part of this activity is categorized under the Accredited Simulation-Based Program (Section 3 – MOC3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. You may claim an additional 2.0 hour for this component.

The hands-on training is a requirement for completing this course. The preceptorship is virtual and consist of an hour-long video call where you will be guided through the insertion and removal of the implant with one of our experts. Models and training material are sent to the learner at no additional cost. 

 

Please note that we have currently reached the funding capacity for the hands-on portion of this course. We are hoping to be able to accept new request for preceptors soon, but for now, any new request for a preceptor pairing will be waitlisted. 

We will be happy to continue receiving your request for hands-on training. However, please note that there will be a delay before you can be paired with a preceptor. Keep in mind that once further funding is secured, pairing priority will be given to those who have been waitlisted.  Access to the online portion of this course will not be impacted.
