OTTAWA - The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada applauds the Conservative Government for allocating $300 million in yesterday's Budget to enable provinces and territories to provide HPV vaccinations to Canadian women and girls.
"HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death amongst Canadian women. This funding will enable provincial and territorial governments to move quickly to put in place vaccination programs in their jurisdictions," said Dr Donald Davis, President of the SOGC.
SOGC is a leader in HPV awareness and education programs. The Society is in the final stages of preparing a comprehensive HPV Clinical Guideline which will provide health care practitioners with the practical knowledge they need to talk to patients about HPV, diagnose and treat the disease, as well as to administer the vaccine. The Guideline will be published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada in June 2007.
