Journalism Award for Excellence in Women’s Health Reporting
Ottawa, Ontario – January 11, 2005 – The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Foundation for Women's Health, announced the launch of the 2005 SOGC/CFWH Award for Excellence in Reproductive Health Journalism. This award, consisting of a $1,000 cash prize per print and broadcast category, recognizes journalists who have excelled in communicating information on reproductive health issues to the public in a Canadian consumer newspaper, magazine or broadcast report in Canada from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2004.
Accurate, responsible and insightful reporting enables women to make informed health and lifestyle choices. In such, the SOGC and the CFWH designed this award to highlight journalism’s valuable service to the public. "Journalists offer an important contribution to the Canadian public by reporting up-to-date information that assist women in making educated decisions in regards to their reproductive health care, which in turn motivates women to take positive action in their lives” said Dr. Gérald Stanimir, President of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.
All articles and reports submitted will be judged by a panel of reproductive health experts and media professionals. Evaluation is based on the overall merit of the entry, with an emphasis on the clarity of the message; the quality and accuracy of statements; the ability to reflect health issues in an original, creative and engaging manner; and the benefit to the Canadian public.
The winners will be notified by May 1st, 2005. Recipients will be honoured during the Awards Ceremony at the SOGC’s Annual Clinical Meeting which will be held in Québec City from June 16 - 21, 2005.
Information on the selection criteria and selection process are available at www.sogc.org (Media Centre). The submission deadline is February 16, 2005.
