Thursday, June 21 – National Aboriginal Day

Igniting the Spirit Gala: A Fundraising Event for Urban Aboriginal Children & Youth
Gourmet Cocktail Party Organized by the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health

Companion Activity 1: Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Institute

For more than a hundred years, people around the world have looked to Le Cordon Bleu for “la crème de la crème” in professional training in the culinary arts.  Ottawa’s Le Cordon Bleu Paris Culinary Arts Institute was established in 1988.  With its bilingual voice and international flavour, Ottawa is the perfect multicultural environment for Le Cordon Bleu. 

If you love to cook and love to eat then a visit to the Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Institute is a definite stop during your stay in the nation’s capital!  Your group will take a tour of the culinary institute and witness the great chefs at work.  In addition, you will be able to watch a 1 ½ hour chocolate cooking demonstration by one of the in-house chefs.  Afterwards, your group will be able to sample the culinary delights!!

Having officially been dubbed as Canada’s prettiest village and with more designated heritage buildings than any other Ontario community of like size, Merrickville is a unique and vibrant Victorian village. Idyllically situated along the historic Rideau Canal, less than an hour’s drive from Ottawa, Merrickville loves to celebrate its history and culture and heartily invites everyone to join in!  

On your personalized tour of Merrickville, you will visit artists’ studios, see glass-blowers at work, learn some history of the area from your knowledgeable tour guide, and enjoy a delicious meal at the infamous Sam Jake’s Inn.  There will even be some spare time to browse the numerous shops where you can find intricate lace, locally blended mustards like tangy Lime Chipotle (a winner at the Worldwide Mustard Competition in Napa, California), crafted leather, antique china, antiquarian books, quilts and much more.

Afternoon Activities

Activity 1: Parliament Hill & Rideau Canal Tour

Duration:

3 ½ hours

Time:

13:00 – 16:30

Meeting Point:

Goups will leave at 13:00.  Please plan to be in the lobby of the Westin 15 minutes prior to departure. It is essential to be on-time due to scheduled tours at the Parliament and on the canal.

Cost:  

$25 per person

Clothing: 

You will be walking to Parliament Hill and to the Rideau Canal, so please wear comfortable shoes.

Conditions: 

Activity will take place rain or shine.
Should the House be in session, tours will be modified.

Today, we invite you to learn all about our Nation’s Capital.  From the political hallways of Parliament Hill to the beautiful landscape along the Rideau Canal, please join us on a historical journey that helped shape Ottawa. 

Our Parliament buildings are rich in history, architecture and politics.  Knowledgeable, bilingual tour guides will lead your group through the Centre Block, the House of Commons and the Senate, imparting information and answering any questions that the group may have.  After the tour, participants are invited to visit the magnificent Peace Tower and travel to the top for a spectacular view of the city.

Following your private tour of Parliament Hill, guests will walk to the Rideau Canal, where they will board a tour boat for a unique tour of the canal.  This man-made canal spans 7.5 KM and will wind past numerous historical sites of the city.  Live commentary will be provided to passengers and they will learn all about the history of the city and the world famous Rideau Canal.

Activity 2:  Camp Fortune – Aerial Park

Duration:  

4 ½ hours

Time:  

13:00 – 17:30

Buses will leave at 13:00.  Please plan to be in the lobby of the Westin 15 minutes prior to departure.

Cost:   

$80 per person

Conditions:

- There is a minimum reach requirement of 1.35 metres for the intro course (Zone 1-2)*
- Reach requirement of 1.75 metres for the full course (Zone 1-5).
- Closed toe shoes are mandatory.
- Each participant is required to sign a waiver prior to participation.
- A parent or guardian’s signature is required for all participants under the age of 18 years.
- Activity operates rain or shine cancelled only due to severe thunderstorms – if cancelled by Camp Fortune due to weather, refunds will be issued.

* Minimum reach requirement is measured as the distance from the ground to the middle of your palm, with your arm fully extended upwards

Come experience the thrill and excitement of Camp Fortune Aerial Experience!

You will be traipsing through the tree tops on monkey bridges and challenging yourself on a course high above the ground on aerial steel wires, rope bridges, suspended walkways and net gangways. The three-hour trek culminates with the ultimate thrill of soaring down the giant zip line. One of few aerial parks in North America, this outing is a must for adventure seekers.

Activity 3: Gatineau Park– Mackenzie King Estate Tour

4 hours

13:00 - 17:00

You will be walking on uneven ground at Mackenzie King Estate – please wear suitable footwear.

Gatineau Hills National Park is a magnificent place to experience the best the outdoors has to offer.  Your dynamic and knowledgeable tour guide will introduce you to the area and pass on the history of how this park was developed.  You will visit some of the most scenic places (definitely bring a camera!), with a stop at the famous Mackenzie King Estate.               

Situated in the heart of the Gatineau Park, Mackenzie King Estate consists of 231 hectares of splendors.  For nearly 50 years, the Estate was the summer residence and refuge of William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada’s tenth prime minister.  At his death in 1950, Mackenzie King bequeathed to Canada this wooded universe where visitors can stroll the trails joining the Estate to the recreational trail network in Gatineau Park.  The restored cottages, romantic gardens and picturesque collection of ruins that King had moved to his property all await the visitor. 

Surrounded by lakes, trees, wildlife and indigenous fauna and flora, you will be captivated by the beauty of it all.  Your group will be picked up and dropped off in front of their hotel and will be accompanied by a group leader at all times.

Activity 4: Golf

We invite you to come and discover Eagle Creek Golf Club, one of the finest public courses in the Ottawa surroundings.

Tee-times :

Available from 13:31 pm to 14:47 pm (departure every 8-10 minutes).  The schedule will be posted near the registration desk
